Nothing Stands Between Me & My Shoes

“They went into my closets looking for skeletons, but thank God, all they found were shoes, beautiful shoes”

-Imelda Marco

Cars aren’t the only thing getting us around these days, our shoes are! What once started off as a simple foot covering is now an item of style, design and comfort. The development of shoes have come a long way. In as early as 1000 BC, the need for foot support was recognized by the Ancient Egyptians. As its purpose evolved, the idea of style seemed to dominate comfort. Today, shoes serve as a fashion statement, and designers know how to satisfy our cravings -for shoes that is.

Like people, shoes have character. The insole, outsole and midsole are just parts that bring it together. Every girl has a list of qualities they seek for in a man and the same goes, when seeking the right pair of shoes. Yes it’s true, we purchase our shoes according to that very same checklist! Aside from the fact that it matches our favorite blouse, we often observe the heel, color, texture, accessories, and how long they’ll actually last.

Owning more than 1,000 pairs of shoes is what made the former Philippines first lady, Imelda Marcos the worlds best known shoe collector. Now let’s see who can top that! Marcos walked in shoes by designers such as Givency, Chanel and Christian Dior. Today, those size 8 ½ shoes are on display at the Marikina City Footwear Museum in Manila. Marikina is known as the shoe capital of the Philippines. Famous shoes have not only walked up and down its streets but have made its mark, giving roads names such as Sandal Street and Slipper Street.

Shoes have become a desire to both men and women. Sandals, boots, loafers, and moccasins, are just a few that you can catch both sexes walking in. Though our needs and wants for shoes will continue to vary, I guess it’s safe to say: finding the right pair of shoes is like finding a soul mate.
